I’ve still been keeping up with the life drawing, despite the fact that I have posted very little over the past month. However, here are my most recent attempts at life drawing.

He wore a hat for this one... oh and used a cane.

I am going to sit down soon and start drawing on the computer again, I’m not going to lie, the thing which has been keeping me away is the Harry Potter books. I’m on the last one now, once I’m done I’ll get some more posts up.

Also, I think I am going to begin putting my stuff up on www.deviantart.com as well.

Life Drawing - 15 minute

Life Drawing - 15 minute

Tonight I went to my second life drawing class, and unlike the last time I had a good time. Instead of one static pose for 3 hours we did a whole bunch of warm up sketches (2 min poses) that I did on rough paper with conte.  In the last hour we did one 25 minute pose and 2 15 minute ones. The above picture was my very last of the evening and my favorite by far.

I focused on proportion (except her left right arm), and line quality. I didn’t want to worry too much about lighting or trying to create a beautiful piece of art. I wanted to pose to have weight and a bit of life. I’m really pleased with how I did for my second ever class, and I am looking forward to next week.

Edit: So I screwed up my left and right…big deal.

Allen the Alien

Allen the Alien

I did the sketch for this over a year ago, it’s pretty much a straight copy of an a Ryan Ottley drawing (I can’t remember the source). I scanned it in and did a real quick (5 minute) ink of it just to clean it up a bit. I didn’t bother fixing up lines or anything. I did this mainly to warm up my hands before attempting the first drawing in a new sketch book. More on that later.

I may clean this up and colour it some time, but I think I’d prefer to do my own Allen if I was going to colour it.

The character is Allen the Alien from Invincible, one of my favorite superhero books and well worthing picking up the first 3 ultimate collections.

Coat on a chair...

Coat on a chair...

Shoe on a box

Shoe on a box

So tonight was the last of the drawing classes, that was a fast 10 weeks. I had a lot of fun though and got a lot of experience drawing things I’d never have attempted to draw.

I didn’t start posting drawings until I was in the last 3 weeks of class, maybe some day soon (when I run out of things to post) I’ll do some drawing class retrospective.

We did a coat hanging on a chair and my shoe propped up by a box, nothing too fancy but I think you can tell what each of them is, and that’s a win for me. We also played with ink…that was tough, and messy. I didn’t keep the painting (inking?) I did so it’ll never be seen here.

I think Mike and I are going to start doing some life drawing classes, that’ll be new to me, but I think it’ll be interesting.

My friend Mike, thanks for having less hair than me

My friend Mike, from my drawing class

Tom from my drawing class, thanks for wearing a toque
Tom from my drawing class

Just getting home from drawing class, actually had a lot of fun and I’m pretty proud of the 2 pieces above.

Instead of dragging in pieces of dead animals this time we drew each other. we each sat at the corner of the table and drew the person across from us from a profile view. We did a bunch of drawings, a couple of which involved conte and chinese china markers, however the 2 above were both of my pencil drawings.

Each took about half an hour (give or take a few minutes).

You may recognize the person from the top drawing, that’s the artist of the popular  web comic Mordant Orange, the second is my class mate Tom. I got lucky because neither of my models had much hair that was visible.

I’d like to thank Tom epecially for wearing a toque.

Picture of the cattle skull

My sketch of a cattle skull

My sketch of a cattle skull

Well, I just got back from drawing class…that was a tough ordeal.

I think I can draw alright if I’m left to my own devices, if someone said “Hey I have a skull here for reference…draw a skull” I’d have no problem with that.

Where it all seems to crash and burn for me is when someone says “Draw this skull exactly as you see it! Don’t screw up!”

Today in drawing class we drew cattle skulls, or rather the same cattle skull over and over again. We did a bunch of blind contour drawings some one minute sketches, three minute sketches and finished with two 25 minute sketches. The above is a picture of the skull and my first 25 minute drawing…

I’ve been working on some more finished pieces with my wacom, but I don’t have anything to show for it yet…hopefully by the end of this weekend.

Edit: I definately took the picture from a lower angle than I was drawing from…next time I’ll have to match it up better. It looks like I was even more off than I was.

More DnD?

Another DnD pic? Double lame.

Another DnD pic? Double lame.

A quick pencil sketch I did...of my dnd character...

A quick pencil sketch I did...of my dnd character...

Sorry, I had to do it.

  1. Because I don’t have many finished pieces (finished as in I’m done with them and proud enough that I can put them up…trust me that’s not all that proud)
  2. I’m putting these up while at work and they’re the only pics I happen to have with me. (I’m on my break…don’t judge me!)

I’m not crazy about these 2, the first was my attempt at a single point perspective. I think it’d look a lot better if I added more detail/painted it.  Stylistically it’s different than I normally do, I was looking at a lot of Joe Olson work at the time. This piece should not reflect on his however… and is a poor attempt at his style.

The second is a rough sketch I did and scanned. Not much else to say about that one.

Okay, that’s the last of my character I promise, I’ve not done anymore and I won’t be doing any more. The next stuff I post will be far more rough than this… Hard to believe?
