Drawing Class – Class mate profiles

Just getting home from drawing class, actually had a lot of fun and I’m pretty proud of the 2 pieces above.
Instead of dragging in pieces of dead animals this time we drew each other. we each sat at the corner of the table and drew the person across from us from a profile view. We did a bunch of drawings, a couple of which involved conte and chinese china markers, however the 2 above were both of my pencil drawings.
Each took about half an hour (give or take a few minutes).
You may recognize the person from the top drawing, that’s the artist of the popular web comic Mordant Orange, the second is my class mate Tom. I got lucky because neither of my models had much hair that was visible.
I’d like to thank Tom epecially for wearing a toque.
Me as ‘The Joker’

Me as the Joker
I started off doing a martian from Mars Attacks, but got stuck and decided I’d leave it for a day.
I then decided that my twitter profile pic should be a self portrait, so I set off drawing myself. After I did the quick drawing I noticed it looked a little crazy, but I figured I’d paint it anyway. After about 20 minutes of not being too happy and trying a few rendering colouring methods…I decided to paint the Joker face on mine. It grew from there.
This is me, as the Joker, and it will be my new twitter profile pic after all. I like it, it was a quick paint job, but the messy look suits it more…yay shortcuts! It took me about an hour.
Batman Sketch – 3 hrs.

I took some more time to draw this weekend. I decided I would do a Batman piece. It took me about 3 hours total (it would’ve taken me longer but I did a really quick paint job on it).
All in all I’m pretty pleased. I think the head and shoulders worked out really well, the hands are painfully bad, but I’ll get’em right eventually.
Also, the tonal difference didn’t show up so well on the dark blue of his costume…dark blue…that was kind of a cop out as well.
I might revisit the painting of this one day.
Spider-man Attempt

Wow…
Well I sat down tonight and forced myself to finish a drawing. I forced myself to keep going with it, even though from the get go I could tell certain parts weren’t going to come out right at all.
I was right, I’m not a huge fan of this, but I finished it and I learned more about using the wacom and I think I am getting better. I went for a more cartoony feel, mainly because it was easier.
I abosutely shortcutted on the suit webs and the color job was a quick 2 colour job to finish it…kinda.
I might try to fix this up another day, but for now, c’est fini!
More this weekend, I’m having fun feeling like I have to finish pieces to put them up here, so hopefully I’ll get better as a result.
Cheers!
Drawing Class and Skulls
November 19, 2008 at 10:57 pm | In Rough Work, drawing class | Leave a CommentTags: cattle skull, contour, drawing class, pencil, sketch
Well, I just got back from drawing class…that was a tough ordeal.
I think I can draw alright if I’m left to my own devices, if someone said “Hey I have a skull here for reference…draw a skull” I’d have no problem with that.
Where it all seems to crash and burn for me is when someone says “Draw this skull exactly as you see it! Don’t screw up!”
Today in drawing class we drew cattle skulls, or rather the same cattle skull over and over again. We did a bunch of blind contour drawings some one minute sketches, three minute sketches and finished with two 25 minute sketches. The above is a picture of the skull and my first 25 minute drawing…
I’ve been working on some more finished pieces with my wacom, but I don’t have anything to show for it yet…hopefully by the end of this weekend.
Edit: I definately took the picture from a lower angle than I was drawing from…next time I’ll have to match it up better. It looks like I was even more off than I was.
Update Coming!
November 19, 2008 at 3:46 pm | In Rough Work | Leave a CommentTo all my non-readers, I just wanted to say that an update is coming. I was trying to do some drawing last night, but couldn’t get myself focused.
Tonight is drawing class, and provding we use our sketch books and not newsprint and charcoal I’ll post my work. Including a photograph of what I was trying to draw.
Stay tuned! (Well don’t, you won’t see anything useful until then…so just come back later.)
More DnD?

Sorry, I had to do it.
- Because I don’t have many finished pieces (finished as in I’m done with them and proud enough that I can put them up…trust me that’s not all that proud)
- I’m putting these up while at work and they’re the only pics I happen to have with me. (I’m on my break…don’t judge me!)
I’m not crazy about these 2, the first was my attempt at a single point perspective. I think it’d look a lot better if I added more detail/painted it. Stylistically it’s different than I normally do, I was looking at a lot of Joe Olson work at the time. This piece should not reflect on his however… and is a poor attempt at his style.
The second is a rough sketch I did and scanned. Not much else to say about that one.
Okay, that’s the last of my character I promise, I’ve not done anymore and I won’t be doing any more. The next stuff I post will be far more rough than this… Hard to believe?
First Post…

I thought I’d get this started with a picture that I am actually pretty happy with. I did this one on my 4×6 wacom tablet in Adobe Illustrator. The tablet was given to me by a good friend, you should check out his web comic some time www.mordantorange.com
It took me about 2 hours, which I didn’t think was too bad, I definitely could have spent some more time on it, there’s some wonky perspective on the axe, and I pretty much gave up on the feet.
Overall pretty happy about it though. There we are, first post done. That wasn’t so hard.
